Navajo Rug Weaving |
|
|
As I have traveled around the country this past year, I have noticed that an especially important part of Navajo culture is not well represented at art show- Rug Weaving. And it most certainly is Art! I spent the better part of the Winter back home in Chinle, with my sister, learning to weave. She is an incredible weaver who is able to weave many different area styles. I have found that the weavers in Chinle are especially adept at this as what is called the "Chinle Style" rugs are not in as great a demand as other styles. I grew up helping my mother weave - carding wool, spinning yarn, etc. - yet I never learned completely how to do it myself. |
|
In fact, out of all 19 kids, only my oldest sister learned how to weave. So, we spent cold, snowy days weaving and laughing and - a month later I had finished my first rug. I am continuing to weave and learn. Considering that my learning curve makes my weaving a bit slow right now, I have started putting other weavers that I know to work for those of you at our shows who want Navajo Weavings. The first person I got busy was my sister and she is now backed up through January 2009! |

Several other people who taught me some things are incredible artists who don't leave the Reservation and I'd love to help you commission a rug from them as well. I hope you love the rugs that I weave and the ones I have made for you by other Navajo weavers as much as you have responded to my Jewelry! Thanks for your interest in helping us to preserve our Navajo Culture! Here are a few more pictures of the weaving and weaving process. I hope you enjoy them! |

This is an Eye Dazzler that my sister did. Two of these are on order now. One my sister is doing and one that I am doing. |

This is a great picture of the Navajo loom setup. It is my first rug and I'm about half way done. |

This is a very popular Double Two Grey Hills pattern. This rug is seen in our booth pictures and runs about $1600. |

My sister and daughter Sephra with her first rug. She has been offered $750 for this rug, but, so far, isn't willing to part with it. |
